The Youth Counsellor

An online UK stress survey has found that six out of ten young people aged 18–24 have felt so stressed by pressure to succeed they have felt unable to cope. The study is believed to be the largest and most comprehensive stress survey ever carried out across the UK with 4,619 people surveyed. The study is included in a new report by the Mental Health Foundation Stress: are we coping? Mental Health Foundation Director Mark Rowland said:

"Our survey highlights just how vulnerable young people are to mental health problems. It shows how much pressure young people are feeling to be a success. Given that three quarters of mental health problems are established in people by the age of 24, it is vital we tackle this as a national priority."

Recent studies have noted a significant uptick in depression and suicidal thoughts over the past years for youth, but many of the pressures teenagers feel from social media are actually consistent with developmentally normal concerns around social standing and self-expression.

The researchers identified specific patterns of brain activation that protect adolescents from experiencing COVID-19-related anxiety and depression.

High school students in B.C. are feeling plenty of pressure when it comes to transitioning to post-secondary, but it's not just about making the grade — the rising cost of tuition and high cost of living in cities add financial stress to the mix.

And for many new students, the traditional way people have tackled these costs — through student loans — is less appealing than before.

Academic pressure and the failure to cope with it is the leading trigger for suicide among students, explained psychiatrists.

Anxiety and depression are on the rise among youth and, whether they personally suffer from these conditions or not, seven-in-ten teens today see them as major problems among their peers.
